Summary:
The violence ended with only the sound of the pair breathing. He took one step back even as she did. There were no more opponents to kill, nothing pressing in on them, yet they did not lower their blades.
The press of back to back was a reassurance, each one weary, each one carrying small cuts and deep bone bruises from a fight that had lasted too long. The bodies around them were cooling, and yet they lived.
Her laughter came first, but he joined it, a low long chuckle to her higher pitch.
Together, they were unbeatable. Together, they defied all who wished them dead, her for betraying a feckless goddess and him for mere existence. She would not push her brother's sensibilities -- she handled those troubles out of his sight -- and he would protect her with his dying breath.
The children of Zaknafein stood, back-to-back, survivors once more.
