Alustriel watched her daughter scouring the sandy shores for the perfect shell. The girl was progressing rapidly in the Arts, studying with her and Niska and any mage that sat still long enough to be asked questions. It was as satisfying as teaching Mena had been, so many decades before.
She truly was lucky that Sam and Drizzt shared the care and raising of their daughter with her, and treasured these moments. Something told her she would need the memories of days like this against the storms ahead, and hoped they served Zanna well.
Somehow, she knew it was needed.

Catti-brie watched as Zanna drew in a breath, released it, and then let the arrow fly. That was one of the tricks of it, to always release at the same part of breathing.
The wounded wolf, driven too far for a ranger to aid, even if Drizzt had been available, fell to the arrow in a merciful kill. Catti-brie nodded to herself for the skill. Her 'sister' would be a fine heiress for Taulmaril, some day.
They picked their way through the trees to the beast.
"Now it won't suffer," Zanna murmured, a ranger's daughter always.
"Aye that," Catti agreed.

Niska leaned against the rail, catching her breath. She knew when the lady joined her but was not opening her eyes.
"It's not like this on rivers," she complained.
A vial was pressed to her hand, making her let go of the rail and take it.
"Rivers move very differently, and these straits are not friendly today," Alustriel said in a sympathetic voice. "Next time, I will know, and see if Talaris or one of the others used to the sea can join me."
"Now I know, I'll brew my own remedy; not trusting your security to a lesser wizard."

"Oh, it's as much a favor to me as not," Niska said. "It's been a long time since I could see one of these through fresh eyes." She smiled as Catti-brie noted the exhibits from the gnomes, with their attempts at automaton works.
"Me eyes nae believe half o' what they see," Catti said with a bright laugh, before drawing the elven wizard off to look more closely at the mechanical marvels.

"Stay close," Alustriel murmured in her partner's ear as they passed an almost invisible line in this sprawling city of thousands. Baldur's Gate was so much larger than Silverymoon in number of people as well as size, but it was densely packed, much like Waterdeep.
Catti-brie kept her senses alert, more concerned with protecting her Lady than be protected by her.
"Our own city, far more sense tae it," she muttered.
Alustriel half-smiled in her disguise as a wandering wizard. "So it has, in my opinion."
"Right tired o' trouble in big cities," Catti averred.
That got an outright laugh.

"Stars and trees, no!" Niska said, firmly casting that idea to the side. "If those asinine fools have not gotten past themselves in all these years, they can damn well shove it for this. You were as much a part of the defense as any of their Riders or our Knights."
Zanna grinned. "I thought I was supposed to be learning diplomacy."
"Not with these idiots," Niska avowed.
